Chunkie, a puppy left chained outside in the rain, is one such unfortunate dog. Weak and ill, she seemed destined to suffer until fate intervened in the form of firefighter Mike Thawley from Sacramento’s Fire Station 14.

While on duty, Mike found Chunkie in terrible condition, tied to a post and exposed to the elements.

He couldn’t leave her there, so he cleaned her up and took her to the Front Street Animal Shelter for medical care.

At the shelter, veterinarians discovered that Chunkie had managed, leaving her skin in poor shape. The shelter staff quickly treated and dressed her in warm clothing to protect her sensitive skin. Though Chunkie was relieved to be rescued, she missed Mike, her savior.

The next day, Mike returned to the shelter for a heartwarming reunion with Chunkie, captured on camera. Their bond was undeniable, and soon after, Mike adopted Chunkie, welcoming her into his family.
