From the Streets to Cozy Homes: Two Kittens Embrace Life Indoors
Once found hiding outside, two kittens have transformed into affectionate lap companions indoors, especially when they notice another cat nearby.
Last month, a kind-hearted individual discovered the kittens in bushes near the Homeward Bound Cat rescue center.
“We don’t know what happened or how they ended up there, but someone saw them and brought them inside. It’s unlikely they got there on their own,” the organization reported.
Despite their challenging start, the kittens quickly adapted and began purring contentedly. “Both were pretty skinny and small, but they were sweet and took on life with a bang,” said a spokesperson for Homeward Bound.
The gray kitten, Toffee Twix, suffered from a kitty cold and an eye infection, while her calico sister, Caramel Swirl, remained by her side.
At just 6 to 7 weeks old, they were severely underweight, but with nutritious food and warm beds, they soon began to thrive.
After a few days in foster care, Toffee’s eye cleared up, allowing her to explore her surroundings and seek attention from her foster mom, Ellen Richter.
Caramel, the larger of the two, quickly made herself home and showed affection for her sister and Ellen. “All they want to do is cuddle and snuggle. They are so sweet and loving,” Ellen shared.
In their first week, Toffee remained small, gaining only 1 to 2 ounces despite nibbling on food. To encourage better eating habits, Ellen introduced a variety of textures and flavors until she found their favorites. “It’s been a struggle finding the right food. After weeks of searching, we finally found ones they like,” she explained.
Caramel instinctively encouraged Toffee to play and provided her with extra cuddles, sensing her sister’s need for comfort.
Ellen introduced new toys, but Caramel was particularly fascinated by a feather wand. She would leap and grab it while letting out playful growls as Ellen tugged at the other end.
At eight weeks old, the kittens moved into a foster room with plenty of space to play, cat furniture to explore, and a tunnel to dash through. Caramel embraced her newfound freedom, racing around the room like a tiny tornado.
Their playful antics soon attracted Matisse, a friendly and sociable cat who made himself home with the new arrivals.
Despite his larger size, he retained a kitten-like spirit, playfully coaxing the little ones to join in their games.
The gentle giant Matisse allowed the kittens to wrestle his tail and leap on him from behind. Caramel was particularly drawn to him, following him around eagerly as if learning the ropes of kittenhood.
Toffee, on the other hand, preferred to observe from her foster mom’s lap, appreciating the playful dynamics between Matisse and Caramel. Occasionally, Matisse would pause mid-play to give Toffee gentle nose kisses.
As Caramel reached the two-pound mark, Toffee was still catching up. Thanks to proper nutrition, she steadily gained strength.
Last week, Ellen celebrated when Toffee finally reached two pounds, marking her readiness for the next exciting chapter in her life.
“These kittens are quiet and calm, with mellow energy. They usually want to be in my lap, held or cuddled, and sometimes climb on my shoulders. Caramel does have more energy than Toffee,” Ellen noted.
After overcoming their difficult beginnings, the kittens now thrive as a bonded pair. They all desire a warm lap to curl up in and a loving home filled with cuddles and affection.
