Trapped in Cages for Six Years, Angelica and Spud Finally Find Freedom and New Homes

Published on November 1, 2024

Angelica, a short-haired Saint Bernard, and Spud, a terrier mix, endured life confined in small, cramped cages within a Virginia home for six long years.

Angelica struggled to stand or turn around in her cage, while Spud would spin in tight, frantic circles, showing signs of distress and frustration.

Then, the pair was discovered by a rescue organization called Rescue & Remember, which works with Knine Rescue, Inc.

Rescue & Remember, based in Virginia, focuses on providing a pathway to a better life for neglected animals, helping them reach safe, loving homes.

When rescuers first saw Angelica and Spud, the dogs appeared severely neglected — dirty, anxious, and hungry.

But once their cages were opened, they ran out in sheer relief, seemingly realizing their freedom for the first time in years.

The reunion was heartwarming. Having only each other for companionship during those difficult years, Angelica and Spud quickly bonded once more. Inside the house, they explored, played, and experienced an open space they had been denied for so long.

Rescue & Remember and Knine Rescue, Inc. worked tirelessly to find both dogs forever homes. Spud was the first to be adopted, joining a family that welcomed him with open arms. He now enjoys the warmth of hugs and affection he had been missing for years.

Angelica’s journey took longer due to health issues, particularly her weak hind legs. However, she began to recover with dedication and care, growing stronger and more joyful each day.
