Tiny Rescue Dog with Special Needs Barks Like a Duck

Pipsqueak, affectionately known as Pip, was just 1.8 pounds when Kelsey took over her care. This tiny Yorkie, rescued from a puppy mill raid, desperately needed a home and was given only about six more months to live.

Originally placed with a foster family, Pip’s situation changed when her foster father needed a lung transplant, forcing them to find a new temporary home for the dog.

Kelsey, who had recently relocated from Wisconsin to Indiana with her family, was contacted by Pip’s previous foster mom. She agreed to take in Pip and made the trip back to Wisconsin to bring her to her new home.

What was intended as a short-term foster arrangement turned into a long-term commitment? Despite the initial plan to find another dog to keep Pip company, she remained with Kelsey’s family well beyond her expected six-month lifespan, living for eight years.

Pip was known for her distinctive barking, which sounded more like a duck’s quack, and she had different barks for various needs, like going outside or getting a treat.

Pip’s health issues, stemming from poor breeding practices, led to a series of unexpected events in Kelsey’s life.

Inspired by Pip, Kelsey adopted six more small dogs, each with special needs or behavioral issues.

The family’s home became a haven for these dogs, complete with a dedicated wall listing all their medications.

Despite the significant financial cost of tens of thousands of dollars for Pip’s care and surgeries, Kelsey and her husband had no regrets.

To keep Pip warm during the winter, Kelsey crafted tiny clothes from guinea pig garments and used doll-sized diapers.

Pip’s love for pickles was another endearing trait; she often attempted to steal them from Kelsey’s mouth.
