Shelter Pit Bull Finds Happiness and a Forever Home, Always Sporting a Smile
Meaty’s journey to finding a loving forever home was far from easy. Before becoming a beloved family member and gaining fame on social media, Meaty spent his days at a shelter in Central Valley.
Fortunately, his luck changed when Lisa Reilly saw his photo on Facebook. Fresno Bully Rescue, a no-kill shelter in California, shared the post.
“I saw him and thought he looked like a bowling ball,” Reilly recalled. “It’s hard to grasp how short he is in person, but he’s so low to the ground and wide like a Mack Truck. When we first got him, he would barrel into you like a bowling ball of dog fat, so he was nicknamed ‘The Meatball,’ or Meaty for short.”
Meaty touched Reilly’s heart, reminding her of her late dog, Cat, who had passed away due to illness. Driven by this connection, she gave Meaty the home and love he needed.
“Fresno Bully Rescue did an amazing job caring for Meaty from the first moment I saw him until I was able to bring him home,” Reilly told The Dodo.
Since his rescue, Meaty has never stopped smiling. He quickly bonded with Reilly’s other rescued dogs, including pit bulls Punky and Ricardo Tubbs and dachshunds Bitty and Dappe.
“One advantage of having a chubby dog is that he’s highly motivated by treats,” Reilly noted. “He’s also very toy-driven and loves to play. He’ll ‘work’ for any toy or treat, which makes photographing him a breeze.”
Reilly added, “He’s really a mama’s boy and just wants to be next to me all the time. It’s wonderful because you can’t have a bad day when he’s around. I’d challenge anyone not to smile when they’re near him.”
