When Dr. Brian Eberhart first met a little Border Collie puppy named Elliot, he felt an instant connection and knew they were meant to be together. Determined to make this a reality, Dr. Eberhart went above and beyond to adopt the pup.

Fateful Encounter Elliot, a scared stray Border Collie, was rescued and brought to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

Due to his tough past, Elliot was fearful of people and tried to hide from the world. However, his gentle eyes captured the hearts of everyone who saw him.

To help Elliot adjust to indoor life, the shelter placed him in a foster home, where he could begin to feel safe and loved. Little did Elliot know, that his foster home—and particularly his foster neighbor—would change his life forever.

“Dr. Eberhart’s neighbor was Elliot’s foster guardian, so he had already met Elliot while he was in foster care and had the opportunity to get to know and fall in love with him,” said Anthony Mercurio, Palm Springs Animal Shelter’s marketing and communications manager.

When Elliot was ready for a forever home, Dr. Eberhart ensured he was first in line—quite literally.

A Dedicated Effort On the morning of Elliot’s adoption, the shelter staff arrived to find Dr. Eberhart already there, seated comfortably in a chair and reading a book, waiting for the shelter to open.

“We noticed Dr. Eberhart camped out in front of the shelter… and found out he was there to adopt Elliot. Other people came by that morning, but once they found out we didn’t open until 1 p.m., they gave up and left,” Mercurio recounted.

Undeterred by the wait, Dr. Eberhart was determined to adopt Elliot. As soon as the shelter opened, the excited pup met his new owner, and it was clear Elliot realized something wonderful was happening.

A New Beginning Elliot, now renamed Leo, found his forever home. Dr. Eberhart chose the name Leo, an acronym for “Love Each Other.”

Settling into his new family, Leo quickly realized he was exactly where he was meant to be. His favorite activities include snuggling with his mom and dad, showcasing his intelligence, playfulness, and affection.

Dr. Eberhart, a proud dog dad, shares Leo’s adventures on his TikTok account, allowing everyone to see the joy and love that Leo brings to his new family.
