Transformed: From Stray to Happy Home in Just Three Months

A sick stray dog, later named Heidi, was found wandering the busy streets of Romania. She had become familiar with the neighborhood, surviving on food scraps and blending into the background as just another stray.

Despite her friendly nature, Heidi’s deteriorating skin condition led many people to avoid her, driving her away due to her mangy appearance.

When the rescue organization “Howl of A Dog” learned about Heidi, they were concerned about her health.

Noticing her enlarged breast, they feared she might have puppies nearby. After speaking with locals, the volunteers learned that Heidi often slept in the area and had never had puppies.

Despite being close to a busy road, the team managed to lure her to safety and secured her with a leash designed not to harm her neck. Heidi understood their good intentions and allowed them to carry her to the car.

Heidi’s condition was severe. Mange had ravaged her body, covering her skin with thick, hard crusts that gave it a stone-like appearance.

The smell from her infection was overwhelming, and her ears had become infested with ticks. The volunteers gave her a medicated bath to soothe her itching and begin the healing process.

Even after just one day in the shelter, Heidi’s condition improved. However, her remaining fur showed signs of mange, so the team decided to clip all her hair.

After allowing her to rest, the rescuers developed a treatment plan for Heidi’s skin infection. They discovered that her enlarged breast was simply a normal hormonal response, not a cause for concern.

The mange was persistent and required several medicated baths, but after 21 days in the shelter, Heidi’s skin condition had significantly improved, and her fur started growing back.

As she began to heal, Heidi started enjoying her baths. A follow-up visit to the veterinary clinic confirmed that her skin infection and mange had completely cleared up. After three months at the shelter, Heidi was a different dog—happy, healthy, and fully recovered from being spayed.

Her time on the streets had been hard, but she was now making up for it by playing with Bruno, another dog rescued by “Howl of A Dog.” Heidi’s story had a happy ending when a loving family in Toronto, Canada adopted her.
