Senior Stray Dog Finds a Loving Home After Years on the Streets
A stray dog who spent her entire life on the streets caught the attention of a visiting tourist in a small resort town.
Concerned by the sight of the homeless senior dog repeatedly wandering the roads, the tourist took action to help.
When the rescue team arrived, residents informed them that the dog, later named Helen, had been a familiar presence in the neighborhood for years.
Although Helen was fortunate to have a relatively safe place to stay and received food from kind passersby, life on the streets was tough, especially for an aging dog like her. She endured cold winters, heavy rains, and storms, all while lacking proper medical care.
Additionally, stray animals like Helen faced constant dangers, including the risk of being hit by cars or mistreated by less compassionate people.
The volunteers managed to approach Helen and gently leashed her. For Helen, this was a moment she had waited for her entire life.
She accepted treats and willingly followed the volunteers. After securing her in a crate, they took her on a two-hour journey to a veterinary clinic.
A plastic tag on Helen’s ear indicated that she had previously been part of a trap-neuter-release program.
This meant she had been captured, spayed, and then released back onto the streets at least six years ago. At the clinic, Helen underwent a thorough examination, including blood tests.
The results revealed that she was suffering from Anaplasmosis, a tick-borne disease, for which she promptly received treatment.
Helen was now safe at the “Howl of a Dog” shelter, where she was given a much-needed bath, likely her first in years. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life, one filled with safety and comfort.
After a month, a follow-up visit to the vet confirmed that Helen had fully recovered. She quickly adapted to her new life, enjoying walks and displaying a friendly and well-behaved temperament.
At around seven years old, it was heartbreaking to think that Helen had spent so much of her life on the streets.
Fortunately, her story took a happy turn when a loving family in the Netherlands adopted her, giving her the home she deserved.
