100 Years Old Woman Finds Joy with Her 11 Years Old Dog
“It was quiet and sad, and then Gucci brought joy into the house.”
Johanna Carrington, who grew up in war-torn Germany, never had the chance to own a dog during her early years. As a centenarian, she decided to fill her life with canine companions.
Previously, Carrington and her late husband had eight Pekingese dogs. She felt lonely after her most recent dog, Rocky, passed away, leaving her without a companion.
Concerned that her age might be a barrier to adopting another dog, Carrington wasn’t sure if the shelter would allow it.
Her neighbor, who volunteers with Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, suggested that the organization could help.
Muttville Senior Dog Rescue found Carrington an excellent match for one of their senior dogs. She eventually adopted an 11-year-old dog named Gnocchi, whom she renamed Gucci.
Gucci was rescued from a hoarding situation where the owner had 22 dogs. Thrilled to be the only pampered pet in his new home, Gucci quickly adapted.
Eddie Martinez, Carrington’s caregiver, and Debbie Carrington, her daughter, promised to ensure Gucci gets daily walks and all his needs are met.
“Johanna has always loved dogs, and this 100-year-old inspiration has recently adopted her latest lucky canine,” Muttville Senior Dog Rescue shared on Facebook.
“Sweet Gucci gets to spend his golden years with his mom in his beautiful new home on Moss Beach. We were happy to help match these two lovely seniors, with a little help from her daughter, Debbie, and a recommendation from her friend and neighbor, Christine. That smile says it all!”
Gucci settled into his new home immediately after his foster parents brought him to meet Carrington.
“He came into the house as if he’d been here before. It was amazing,” Carrington said. “When he saw me sitting in my chair, he jumped up and perched on my lap. He made himself very comfortable. Right away, he was just our boy.”
Now living the life of a spoiled pup, Gucci enjoys playing fetch with many toys. He also receives daily back massages while watching TV with his new mom.
Carrington doesn’t mind when Gucci burrows under her covers, providing an extra cozy resting spot.
“It was kind of sad here after she lost her other dog,” Debbie Carrington told TODAY. “It was quiet and melancholy until Gucci arrived and brought joy into the house. Laughing at him running around, doing silly things, and then resting on her lap when she’s in her chair or bed makes her very happy.”
Carrington and Gucci are planning something special for her 101st birthday in December. She believes that owning dogs has contributed to her long and healthy life.
“Animals bring so much joy into our home,” she says. “It’s amazing.” This sentiment is supported by science.
“Research has shown that pet ownership and human-animal interactions can provide essential social and emotional support for older adults,” said Steven Feldman, head of the Human Animal Bond Research Institute.
