Man Reunites His Dog’s Best Friend by Adopting Him from Shelter

Derrick Schmidt and his fiancé first brought their dog, Dexter, into their lives when he was just six months old. After searching shelter websites, they found Dexter and felt an immediate connection.

When they visited the shelter, Dexter leaned against Derrick in his cage, and it was clear to Derrick that they were meant to adopt him.

About six months later, Derrick and his fiancé encountered Doakes, a local stray dog. Despite Derrick’s initial reservations, Dexter and Doakes instantly bonded, playing together as if they were long-lost brothers.

Doakes frequently visited Dexter while Derrick worked in the yard, roaming the neighborhood without a collar.

When animal control began searching for stray dogs, Derrick took action to protect Doakes, hiding him in his garage.

He also warned Doakes’ owner about keeping a collar on him. Unfortunately, Doakes was eventually taken by animal control due to his lack of identification.

Determined not to lose Doakes, Derrick contacted every shelter and visited them in person, even when told Doakes was not there.

His persistence paid off when he finally located Doakes at a shelter. Derrick adopted and kept him safe from his previous owners, walking him on a leash to ensure his safety.

Derrick sold his house and moved to the countryside with a fenced yard to provide a better environment for both dogs. Dexter and Doakes now live with their loving family in their new home.
