Older Dogs Get Their Own Stair Lift

For many pet owners, dogs are beloved family members, and ensuring their comfort and well-being is a top priority.

Sonya, who has three senior dogs—a 13-year-old pug named George, a 10-year-old pug named Bodhi, and a 10-year-old Boston terrier named Sam—understood this well when she noticed her pets struggling with stairs due to mobility issues, especially Bodhi, who was dealing with a torn knee ligament.

Sonya partnered with her boyfriend Zach and his retired engineer parents to address this challenge and create a unique solution: a “doggie-vator.”

This homemade wooden stair lift, which Sonya built during a three-month quarantine period, is designed to help her dogs reach the second floor more easily.

The doggie-vator has a strong motor capable of carrying multiple dogs at once. The lift safely transports the dogs upstairs and back down by pressing a button.

Its design ensures safety, with the cart moving slowly and the wiring neatly concealed beneath the stairs.

Sonya, an occupational therapist experienced in helping elderly individuals with mobility issues, drew inspiration from traditional stair lifts for people. Her innovation offers a practical solution for her dogs, who have quickly adapted to using the lift.

The older pugs enjoy the ride, and even the younger pup, Emery, seems to appreciate the convenience of the doggie-vator.
