Heartwarming Video Shows How Abused Dog Rex Overcomes Anxiety with the Help of His Siblings
A heartwarming video shared on Reddit has captured the internet’s attention, showing two compassionate dogs comforting their anxious sibling.
The clip features a small Shih Tzu named Huxley and a deaf dog named Winnie caring for their big brother, Rex, an English/French Mastiff mix suffering from severe anxiety due to past abuse.
From Abusive Owners to a Loving Home
Research from the University of Helsinki reveals that anxiety is common among dogs, particularly those with a history of abuse.
Their study found that 72.5% of the 13,715 pet dogs surveyed in Finland exhibited anxiety-like behaviors. Rex’s experience aligns with these findings.
Abused by his first owners, beaten, and subjected to a shock collar by his second, Rex developed severe anxiety. Despite their good intentions, his third family couldn’t manage his aggression and resource-guarding tendencies.
With his fourth owner, who adopted him at 1.5 years old, Rex has spent the last 2.5 years undergoing rehabilitation.
His current owner has worked tirelessly to help him overcome his fears. Although Rex still exhibits anxious behaviors, he has made significant progress and now enjoys time with his human and dog siblings.
“With anxiety, the dog generally wants nothing to do with whatever it’s scared of and will try to get out of that situation as quickly as it can,” Rex’s owner explained to Newsweek. “He was my first dog post-divorce when I was single, so we greatly helped each other.”
A Bond Forged by Love
The video showcases the deep bond between the three dogs. Huxley, a fearless and friendly Shih Tzu, thrives in their loving home, while Winnie, deaf, relies heavily on Rex.
Despite his vocal nature and occasional growls when scared, Winnie’s inability to hear means she loves him unconditionally. Rex has become accustomed to her disability, often acting as her ears.
Their owner notes that Huxley and Winnie have played a crucial role in Rex’s recovery. Their affection and support have helped bring Rex out of his shell, showcasing the powerful impact of love and companionship.
This unique trio has garnered significant attention online, with their video receiving nearly 21,000 upvotes on Reddit.
“I can’t tell you how much this information sparks joy in me. Winnie, Rex, and Huxley are some of my current favorite people. Oh, and you’re pretty awesome, too, for giving these wonderful dogs a happy home,” commented one Reddit user.
Rex’s journey from a traumatic past to a loving family is a testament to the power of patience, care, and the healing touch of fellow animals. “I’ve always said I’m fortunate to have such a cool dog,” his owner shared.
