Rescued Cat Waits by the Door Every Day to Thank Her Caregiver and Her Four Kittens
Mellissa, the founder of Tiny but Mighty Kitten Rescue, received an urgent call about a pregnant cat needing a new home. The cat’s family could no longer care for her and wanted to ensure she found a safe space.
Moon, the cat, had been rescued from a parking lot and quickly conquered her new surroundings with her warm and trusting nature. She followed Mellissa everywhere, craving affection and attention.
“Just five days after arriving, she went into labor in the middle of the night,” Mellissa told Love Meow. “I woke up early that morning to find she had given birth to four kittens – two boys and two girls. Moon was content and happy with her little ones.”
Moon trusted Mellissa completely, allowing her to gently change the bedding and move the kittens onto a fresh towel.
Her appreciation for the care she received was clear, and she was overjoyed to have an abundance of food as she nursed her babies.
Her appetite grew as she nursed constantly. “She couldn’t wait for her next large can of kitten food,” Mellissa said.
Moon began waiting by the door each day, greeting Mellissa with adorable “smiles” and vocal requests for food. After eating, she’d rub against Mellissa to express her gratitude.
“She’s always making biscuits – on the floor, on a blanket, even on her kittens. It doesn’t matter where. She’s just so happy,” Mellissa shared.
As the kittens grew and opened their eyes, they began exploring the world around them. Aurora, a tuxedo kitten, was the first to venture out of the nest, crawling to greet Mellissa while her siblings stayed behind to nurse.
To Mellissa’s surprise, Moon, too, began enjoying playtime. “Her favorite toys are the cat charmer, feather wand, and the tower of tracks, but she loves chasing anything I throw around.”
Once the kittens became more adventurous, Mellissa moved them to a larger space to explore. Moon continued her daily routine of greeting Mellissa with affectionate purrs, watching as she cleaned, refilled food bowls, and laid out new toys for the group.
Cyrus, the boldest kitten, was the first to try solid food and soon became a lap cat, even demanding to be picked up. “Moon got a little protective when he wandered too far and tried to carry him back to the nest,” Mellissa recalled.
As weaning progressed, all four kittens quickly adapted to eating from bowls, showing the same big appetites as their mom. Moon observed their progress, always ready to clean their faces after each meal.
“She’s such a supportive mom. The kittens are so lucky to have her,” Mellissa said. Moon even helped them as they learned to use the litter box, cheering them on from the sidelines.
Now six weeks old, the kittens are playful and curious, and Moon has begun joining in on the fun. “It’s heartwarming to watch her play with them,” Mellissa said.
With her final litter under her care, Moon is rediscovering her playful side, enjoying her time as a doting mom while still having fun like a kitten.
