How to Keep Your Dog Safe During the UK’s Mini-Heatwave: Expert Tips for Keeping Pets Cool and Hydrated
As the UK prepares for a brief heatwave, pet owners are urged to protect their dogs from rising temperatures.
Rob Steele, from the global pet brand PetSafe, has shared some valuable advice on how to keep your furry friends safe, cool, and hydrated during the hot weather.
Ice Cubes for Dogs: A Refreshing Treat
While there are mixed opinions on giving dogs ice cubes, Steele confirms that it’s safe and can provide a refreshing treat.
However, he cautions that owners should monitor their dogs while they enjoy ice and ensure the cubes are an appropriate size.
“Avoid giving large ice cubes to small breeds, as they can be a choking hazard,” Steele advises. Smaller cubes or ice shavings are a safer option for smaller dogs, especially those who tend to eat quickly.
To make ice cubes even more appealing, Steele suggests adding pet-friendly flavorings like peanut butter, salmon, lean chicken, or tuna to the water before freezing. This adds both flavor and nutrition to the cool treat.
Ice-Cold Toys and Frozen Treats
For added mental stimulation, Steele recommends using toys that can be filled with water or wet food before freezing.
This not only keeps dogs cool but also provides a fun, engaging activity that can help distract them from the heat.
Another creative idea is to fill a bowl with low-sodium meat stock and scatter a few treats before freezing it to make an “ice lick.”
Frozen carrots and apple slices also make healthy, refreshing snacks, but remove the seeds and core beforehand.
Keeping Dogs Hydrated
Ensuring dogs have access to fresh water at all times is essential, especially in hot weather. Steele recommends placing the water bowl in a visible and easily accessible spot, and adding ice cubes to keep the water chilled and encourage dogs to drink more.
If your dog needs extra encouragement to stay hydrated, a pet water fountain with a bubbling flow can make drinking more enticing. This will help prevent dehydration and overheating.
Other Cooling Methods
If your dog isn’t interested in frozen treats or cold food, Steele suggests laying them on a damp, chilled towel to help cool them down.
Another option is to use a mist spray bottle to gently mist them with water. “Start slowly and gauge your dog’s reaction,” Steele advises, as some dogs might be frightened by the spray.
For a fun and cooling activity, a paddling pool is a great way to help dogs stay cool while having a splash.
By following these tips, pet owners can help their dogs stay safe, cool, and comfortable during the UK’s hot weather.
