Elderly Rescue Dog Completes His Bucket List and Thrives
Morgan, an 18-year-old dachshund, recently found a new lease on life after being rescued from Lee County Domestic Animal Services (LCDAS) in Fort Myers, Florida, following the death of his owner.
Upon realizing Morgan’s advanced age, shelter officials made the compassionate decision to transfer him to a more suitable environment for his golden years. They contacted Senior Paws Sanctuary (SPS) to assist the aging dog.
Kate Reidy, Morgan’s foster mother, shared with The Dodo, “LCDAS called SPS to let us know that an unadoptable elderly dog had arrived and asked if we could help him.” After visiting Morgan, the founder of SPS instantly fell in love with him.
Morgan was welcomed into Reidy’s home, where he joined her 10-year-old dog, Charlie. Although Reidy anticipated that the elderly dog would be slow and sleepy, she was pleasantly surprised.
“I joke that Morgan has Benjamin Button disease,” she remarked, noting how he became increasingly lively and vibrant over the past year. “His personality blossomed, and most people can’t believe he’s 18!”
Quickly adjusting to his new surroundings, Morgan has embraced life with enthusiasm. Reidy has helped him navigate his new home, assisting him as he climbs onto the sofa and bed at his own pace.
“He loves to be the center of attention,” she explained. “He enjoys cuddling and often wakes up to sniff my face to remember who to sit with!”
While Morgan’s first 18 years remain a mystery, Reidy decided to create a bucket list for him. She observed that his foster home energized him and inspired him to explore.
Despite being a senior dog, Morgan has enthusiastically checked off every item on his list, relishing every outing with his foster mom.
“He loves exploring new smells and meeting new people, so every trip was a chance to discover something new,” Reidy said. “The attention and affection he receives from everyone he meets are things he truly enjoys.”
Morgan still has several adventures on his bucket list, including riding in a hot air balloon, enjoying a dog spa day, and even meeting Ellen DeGeneres.
As he approaches his 19th birthday, he wishes to receive birthday cards worldwide.
Reidy humorously added that she wouldn’t mind if some cards came with a dollar for him to share with his SPS team.
While many dogs his age might prefer a life of leisure, Morgan is eager to experience everything the world has to offer, and he and Reidy are committed to making the most of their time together.
