Heroic Dog Thwarts Dognapping at Pet Store
Vango, an Australian shepherd, played a crucial role in his rescue when he alerted staff at a pet store in Gatineau, Quebec, about his suspected abduction.
Yves Jodoin, a dog trainer at Au Royaume des Animaux, recounted the events of Monday when Vango arrived at the store with a couple who were regular customers for cat food.
Immediately, Jodoin sensed something was amiss as the couple seemed clueless about Vango’s basic information, like his age, health status, and dietary habits. Despite attempts to divert attention, Vango persisted in barking and seeking Jodoin’s help.
A quick social media check by a colleague revealed that Vango had been reported missing from his home in Buckingham, Quebec, just a few hours earlier.
Recognizing Vango as a dog he had trained since he was a puppy, Jodoin called out to him, prompting an excited response from the dog, clearly indicating his disconnection from the couple.
The couple’s claim of finding Vango in the woods was met with skepticism, especially when the woman mentioned keeping him as a support animal due to her health issues.
Despite the couple’s reluctance, Jodoin urged them to relinquish Vango, eventually contacting the dog’s owner, Josée Francoeur, who was distraught over his disappearance.
Francoeur had reported Vango missing after he vanished from her enclosed yard earlier that day.
The ordeal took an emotional toll on Francoeur, who relentlessly searched for her beloved pet with the help of social media and local authorities.
She has since reported the couple to the police, though charges are pending as authorities investigate the circumstances of Vango’s appearance at the pet store.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of microchipping pets, as the SPCA de L’Outaouais emphasizes, hoping to prevent similar situations.
Francoeur lamented the avoidable nature of the ordeal, highlighting the need for responsible pet ownership and awareness.
