Cat Misidentified as a Kitten Proves to Be Much Older

A cat abandoned by the roadside was initially thought to be a seven-week-old kitten, but it was later discovered that she was much older. Named Pixie, the cat was taken to a local animal shelter after being rescued.

Heather, an ER nurse who frequently fosters kittens, explained to Love Meow that Pixie’s small size led to the initial misunderstanding.

“They thought she was a kitten because of her size,” she said. Despite weighing less than two pounds, Pixie had already developed adult teeth and was estimated to be nearly a year old, making her a puzzling little feline.

The shelter recognized Pixie’s need for specialized care and contacted Heather for assistance. “They called me and asked if I’d try to ‘work my magic and put some weight on her,’” she recalled. Although Pixie was small, she possessed a big personality.

“Anyone who meets Pixie falls in love with her. She loves to be held on her back like a baby and trusts all humans,” Heather noted. “It was impossible not to love and fight for her.”

Heather worked hard to improve Pixie’s appetite while addressing her severe stomach issues. She experimented with different foods and provided supplemental care. As time passed, it became evident that Pixie would not grow to a typical size.

Despite her petite stature, she exhibited behaviors characteristic of adult cats and had an impressive purring ability that often gave away her hiding spots.

“She is as coordinated as an adult cat, can climb, jump, and has moody moments. Her eyes are so expressive,” Heather described.

Pixie enjoyed spending time with Noey, a blind cat of similar age but significantly larger. “She didn’t have any trouble putting him in his place,” Heather laughed. Additionally, she took on a nurturing role with a seven-week-old kitten named Buttercup, playfully wrestling and zooming around with her. “I think Pixie enjoyed the companionship,” Heather added.

Pixie also had a talent for finding cozy napping spots, often burying herself in soft piles of clothes. Heather was determined to resolve Pixie’s chronic tummy troubles, trying various solutions over several months.

“It was two steps forward and one step back for a few months,” she explained. Ultimately, the shelter’s vet suggested a fecal transplant using oral capsules.

With Heather’s dedicated care, Pixie eventually reached a healthy weight of 3.5 pounds as an adult cat.

However, Heather was concerned about her adaptability, as it would require a special owner willing to commit to her unique needs.

Then, Heather received a message from Trina, a woman whose cat had similar health issues. After communicating daily for three weeks, Trina convinced Heather that she would do everything possible to support Pixie.

“Pixie’s new mom thoughtfully made plans for her home and medical accommodations. It couldn’t have been a better match,” Heather said.

One night, Heather shared the good news with Pixie, who responded with a slow blink and a gentle paw on her shoulder as if to express gratitude.

After months in foster care, Pixie began a new chapter with Trina. Throughout their long drive home, she rested on Trina’s shoulder and fell asleep in her lap.

Once settled in, Pixie quickly found her favorite sunbathing spot by the window, and her joyful purring filled the room. “Pixie climbed into a shopping bag hanging on a door and found a cozy new spot to chill,” Trina shared.

Introduced to Trina’s other cats, Pixie, though the smallest, held her own among her new friends. Now, Pixie is off her medication and thriving with her forever family, happily zipping around the house, taking breaks on the couch, in a comfy bed, or snuggling with her humans. “I think she’s happy here and has settled in nicely with the rest of the herd,” Trina concluded.
