May shared that Daffy’s decline was swift. “He went from a completely ordinary 8-year-old dog to a completely blind dog in about 3 to 5 months,” he posted on Reddit. “It tears my heart to watch this dog I grew up with—he knocks things over, he doesn’t know me—he simply suffers.”

At nine years old, Daffy suffers from canine diabetes, a condition similar to human diabetes, where the body struggles to produce insulin, making it challenging to process sugar. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for this disease.

Daffy’s family suspected diabetes last year when he began urinating frequently, a clear sign of the condition.

After veterinary testing, they discovered his blood sugar levels were alarmingly high. Shortly after his diagnosis, Daffy lost his sight and faced the heartbreaking reality of never seeing his loved ones again.

Determined to help him, Daffy’s family and veterinarians worked diligently to preserve his health. They closely monitored his blood sugar levels and consistently administered his medication.

After stabilizing his condition, the veterinarians agreed to proceed with surgery to restore Daffy’s vision. “Fortunately, we kept his statistics stable, and [the doctors] agreed to try the surgery,” May remarked.

In January, Daffy underwent the surgery successfully. His family captured the emotional moment when the veterinarian removed Daffy’s bandages, allowing him to see his family for the first time since becoming blind.

Daffy was ecstatic, wagging his tail excitedly as he reunited with his mom and dad. Though his vision is improved, it is not fully restored.

The touching video of Daffy’s joyful reunion quickly went viral, garnering over 1.5 million views since its release on YouTube on May 14.

May expressed pride in Daffy’s recovery, stating, “He still has diabetes, so he has insulin doses twice a day, but the surgery to fix his eye was quite successful, with no difficulties or concerns about his vision,” as he told The Huffington Post.

This heartwarming story highlights the resilience of both animals and their loving families, showcasing their bond.
