In real life, the dog’s name is Abbey, and she continues to live a happy life with her family and trainer, Steve Berens.

Now 13 years old, Abbey has slowed down a bit, with her hearing not as sharp as it used to be. However, she’s still energetic and enjoys playing with her ball and chewing on bones. “She’s older, but she’s still got some spunk left,” said Berens in a recent interview.

Berens also shared what working with Will Smith during the movie was like. While some actors don’t connect much with the animals they work with, Smith is different.

“Will saw Abbey as his co-star and bonded with her,” Berens explained. “She adored him, which greatly impacted their on-screen chemistry.”

Interestingly, Smith’s relationship with Abbey carried personal meaning. He lost a dog in a tragic car accident as a child and promised himself he wouldn’t own another pet because the loss was so painful.

Despite this, Smith is so fond of Abbey that he asks Berens if he can keep her. “I was practically begging,” Smith admitted, “but she already had her family, so it wasn’t meant to be.”

Abbey’s performance and the bond she shared with Smith became a memorable part of I Am Legend, showcasing a unique connection between humans and animals that resonated with audiences everywhere.
