They Went to Adopt a Cat and Kitten-But Left with a Whole New Family
When a tabby cat and her four kittens arrived at Exploits Valley SPCA, they were bursting with affection, ready to charm their way into a loving home.
“A sweet tabby mom came to our shelter with her four kittens—one boy and three girls,” the SPCA shared. “Mama Squirt is incredibly gentle, friendly, and easygoing. She’s done a wonderful job raising her kittens to be like her. They all love people, attention, and playtime.”
The kittens, thriving in the warmth of their mother’s care, soon outgrew their small nursery kennel. Ready for new adventures, they moved into a larger room at the shelter.
Full of energy, they darted around the space, playing and chasing each other, sometimes pouncing on their mom in playful bursts.
They spent hours batting at toys, and one even climbed to the top of their favorite tower as if claiming victory.
Meanwhile, Mama Squirt enjoyed the extra room to stretch out and relax after her hard work raising them. She watched over her kittens as they played while waiting for the right family to take them home.
Squirt’s affectionate nature extended to the shelter staff and volunteers, who were often treated to her purring and gentle snuggles.
She had done her last round of mothering, and her days worrying about food or shelter were behind her.
When the time came to find homes, Pikachu, the only boy of the litter, was the first to be adopted. Meanwhile, Squirt and her daughters—Mew, Meowth, and Eevee—patiently waited their turn.
Crystal, who had adopted Pikachu, couldn’t stop thinking about the rest of the tabby family. She introduced Pikachu to her friends, Harry and Denise Hutchings, and they were immediately smitten.
Crystal believed the Hutchings’ home would be perfect for Squirt and one of her kittens, so she encouraged them to visit the shelter.
Although Harry hadn’t planned to adopt that day, he couldn’t resist the tabby family’s sweet faces. Wanting to help, he agreed to foster Squirt and her three remaining kittens, giving the shelter some much-needed space.
Before long, Squirt and her babies settled into their new foster home, filling it with joy and playful energy.
The Hutchings quickly grew attached to the loving mama and her mischievous kittens. Initially, the plan was to keep Squirt and one kitten and return the others to the shelter for adoption.
But as the day to return the kittens approached, Harry and his family realized they had fallen in love with all of them.
Instead of bringing two kittens back to the shelter, Harry returned with four adoption papers, deciding to keep the entire tabby family.
Now, Squirt and her kittens—Mudder, Sook, Coyot, and Runt—have found their forever home with the Hutchings, where they’ll spend the rest of their lives together.
