Indiana Man’s Cruel Request: Euthanize Healthy Dogs for a New Girlfriend
A shocking case from Indiana has drawn public outrage after a man tried to euthanize his two healthy dogs because of a new relationship.
In June 2018, the man brought his two senior dogs, Cosmo and Sam, to a local veterinary clinic and requested their euthanization because his new girlfriend was allergic to dogs.
Cosmo, a Labrador Retriever mix, and Sam, a Pointer, had been with their owner for almost ten years and were inseparable.
Instead of finding them a new home or taking them to a shelter, the owner opted for “convenience euthanasia,” a term used when pets are put down because they no longer fit into their owner’s lifestyle.
The vet refused to comply, stating that euthanasia should only be considered to prevent an animal’s suffering.
The clinic reached out to Begin Again Rescue Co. (BARC), a foster-based, non-profit rescue in Valparaiso, Indiana, and handed the dogs to their care.
Finding Cosmo and Sam a New Home
Cosmo and Sam struggled initially with their sudden change in environment, but the volunteers at BARC were determined to find them a loving home.
Finding a forever home for a bonded pair of senior dogs was challenging, but BARC worked tirelessly to promote the dogs’ story.
After months without an adoption match, BARC connected with PAWS Tinley Park, a no-kill animal shelter in Illinois.
In December 2018, Eric and Tiffany Dybas, a couple who recently lost their dog, decided to adopt Cosmo and Sam after hearing their story.
In a Facebook post, BARC celebrated the dogs’ new home, saying, “Thanks to our friends at PAWS Tinley Park, Sam and Cosmo are laying on a comfy couch tonight! They were so good when they visited Santa; now their Christmas wish has come true! They have a home!”
Now settled in with their new family, Cosmo and Sam enjoy a life filled with love, comfort, and many treats. Despite their arduous journey, these two dogs finally got the happy ending they deserved.
