Prosthetic Paws Give New Life to Amputee Rescue Dog Saved from Euthanasia
Every animal deserves a chance at life; for some, that means receiving special care to overcome their unique challenges.
One such story is that of Monika, a rescue dog who was saved from euthanasia after losing her paws due to mistreatment.
Last December, Monika was found in the small Russian village of Plastunovskaya, suffering from severe injuries that led to the amputation of her paws.
When rescue volunteers Marina Gapich and Alla Leonkina took her in, they were heartbroken to learn that specialists recommended putting her down. However, they were determined to find an alternative solution.
With unwavering dedication, the volunteers searched for help and eventually connected with Sergei Gorshkov, a veterinarian specializing in prosthetics.
Thanks to the community’s support, they raised approximately 400,000 Russian rubles (around $5,400) to fund the creation of new legs for Monika.
Despite his lack of experience in crafting dog prosthetics, Gorshkov accepted the challenge. He created titanium prosthetic paws coated with a coating developed at Tomsk Polytechnic University. Remarkably, Monika adapted to her new legs faster than anyone anticipated.
According to Gorshkov, after a slow start, she began to stand and walk within three days, exploring her surroundings with newfound freedom.
The veterinarian expressed his joy in being able to save Monika, highlighting the incredible impact that hope and perseverance can have in the lives of animals in need.
Monika’s transformation showcases the power of compassion and the remarkable things that can happen when individuals refuse to give up on animals, even in dire circumstances.
Thanks to the dedicated rescue team and Gorshkov’s innovative work, Monika can now enjoy life again.
