Meet Brodie: The Lovable “Wonky” Dog Overcoming All Odds
Brodie, a German shepherd-border collie mix, faced a traumatic start in life. At just 13 days old, he was attacked by his mother, causing severe facial and cranial deformities.
Despite these challenges, Brodie’s new adoptive parents, Amanda Richter, 30, and Brad Ames, 23, saw beyond his unique appearance and fell in love with his sweet personality.
The couple met Brodie at Alberta, Canada’s Old MacDonald Kennels, and the connection was immediate. Richter shared their experience with SWNS, saying it was “love at first sight.”
After spending a few hours walking and playing with Brodie, they took him home that same day, with the shelter staff confident they were the right fit.
Brodie’s journey hasn’t been easy. His mother’s attack left him with a fused jaw and stunted development on one side of his face, resulting in partial blindness in one eye. However, these physical differences haven’t dampened his spirit.
The shelter received numerous adoption requests for Brodie; he even went to a new home once before.
Unfortunately, the first adoption attempt didn’t work out—Brodie’s energy was too much for his previous owner, leading to his return to the shelter after just five months.
Richter acknowledges that Brodie is hyper but also points out his intelligence and quick learning abilities.
She says he can learn new tricks in just 10 minutes, proving that there’s nothing wrong with his brain. For Richter, Brodie’s first owner lacked patience and consistency.
Now, with his new family, Brodie is thriving. Richter and Ames are committed to giving him the love and structure he needs to succeed.
They even have plans to train him as a therapy dog in the future, believing he can make a difference in the lives of others with disabilities.
For now, Brodie is simply enjoying life with his new parents. Richter describes him as “the happiest pup” at the dog park, always eager to play and run.
She adds, “He has no idea he looks different.” Brodie’s story is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of love and patience.
