Service Dog Helps 11-Year-Old Girl with Rare Disorder Walk Again: The Heartwarming Story of Bella and George.
When 11-year-old Bella met George, her life took a dramatic turn. Struggling with a rare disorder, she had relied on crutches for mobility.
But now, with George—a 2-year-old Great Dane—as her service dog, Bella is walking with ease and even running through the yard.
Bella’s mother, Rachel Burton, shared her amazement with TODAY, saying, “I can’t recall the last time I saw my child running through the yard. Watching her run was truly an amazing sight for us.”
This progress has been so remarkable that the family will travel from Woburn, Massachusetts, to Orlando, Florida, where George will be honored by the American Kennel Club for his life-changing impact on their family.
Bella’s journey has been challenging. At age 2, she was diagnosed with Morquio syndrome, a rare genetic disorder affecting 1 in 200,000 births.
The condition causes a crucial enzyme deficiency, leading to bone growth and development complications.
By age 11, Bella had undergone nine major surgeries, including reconstructing her hips and feet. She relied on crutches to swing her legs, and her lower body muscles had weakened significantly.
Everything changed when the Burtons discovered the Service Dog Project in Ipswich, Massachusetts.
The organization specializes in training Great Danes to assist people with balance and mobility challenges.
Although the program usually matches dogs with adults, the Burtons quickly saw that Bella and George fit perfectly.
George’s size and gentle nature make him an ideal companion for Bella. At 131 pounds and 43 inches tall, George is a sturdy support for Bella, who stands at 44 pounds. He helps her stay steady as she walks, giving her the confidence to retire her crutches.
Rachel Burton shared how George adjusted to Bella’s medical needs: “At first, he didn’t like it when she would get her IV put in.
He would want to get up and protect her. But then he realized it had to be done.” Now, George is Bella’s constant companion, even sleeping by her side at night.
Bella’s prognosis is uncertain, as Morquio syndrome varies widely in life expectancy, but she continues to have regular check-ups with specialists. Through it all, George has been by her side, providing stability, unwavering companionship, and love.
