Why Pet Grooming Costs More Than a Haircut: One Groomer’s Hilarious Explanation

Pet grooming is often seen as a luxury, with many pet owners hesitating to invest in professional grooming due to the perceived high cost.

However, professional grooming offers a comprehensive clean-up that most owners cannot provide at home.

This includes not just washing and brushing but also essential services like ear and eye cleaning, nail trimming, and even anal gland expression.

These require specific tools and expertise, making professional grooming an essential aspect of pet care.

Despite the benefits, many pet groomers face complaints about their pricing. To address these concerns, Copenhagen-based groomer Laura Gedgaudaite created posters in her salon explaining why pet grooming is more costly and demanding than getting a haircut.

She highlighted that grooming often involves managing anxious, energetic, or aggressive animals. Handling these situations requires strength, patience, and a calm demeanor, especially when dealing with larger breeds.

Laura explained, “It takes a lot of energy to handle a dog if it’s not calm, especially if it’s a giant breed. But if they are aggressive or biting, I usually choose not to groom them, and they must go home.

You have to be a strong person mentally to do this job because the dogs can feel if you are afraid or angry; they feel the adrenaline in your body and respond to it. So eventually, you learn how to trust yourself more.”

Despite the challenges, Laura finds joy in her work. “I’m happiest when I do an excellent job making them look super cute, clean, and fresh again.

And if they are matted, it’s gratifying to help them be free of that because it irritates their poor skin.

And, of course, I enjoy the owners’ reaction when they see their dog all trimmed and beautiful and when they appreciate the job I do.”

Laura’s posters humorously depict the rigorous and sometimes exhausting process of grooming pets, reminding customers that it’s not just a simple haircut—a service that requires expertise, physical effort, and a lot of patience.

Ultimately, her goal is to make pets look great and comfortable and ensure that owners leave happy with their newly groomed furry friends.
