For over a month, a loyal dog named Salvatore kept watch outside a vacant Florida home, waiting patiently for a family that never returned.

Each day, Salvatore sat by the door, guarding the empty property with the hope that his family would return.

Local dog rescuer Gloria Cabal first noticed Salvatore keeping his vigil and was determined to help him.

Cabal tried to gain Salvatore’s trust for weeks by offering food, water, and treats. But the loyal dog refused to leave his post.

Eventually, a new realtor arrived and pushed Salvatore out of his usual spot, causing him to move to a nearby area.

Then, Salvatore seemed to understand his family wasn’t coming back, and he finally allowed Cabal to approach him.

She took him to Everglades Angels Dog Rescue, where staff members welcomed him with open arms.

“He was very protective of his yard,” said Dennis Guevara, an Everglades Angels employee, in an interview with The Dodo. “He guarded his territory but wasn’t aggressive or hostile about it.”

Once at the rescue, Salvatore quickly warmed up to the kind staff. They were heartbroken to see that such a devoted dog had been abandoned.

Guevara noted that Salvatore quickly became a volunteer favorite, often jumping on the couch to cuddle and seek affection.

Salvatore is now available for adoption, and the staff at Everglades Angels is confident he will soon find a loving family who will never leave him behind.

Thanks to the dedication of caring rescuers, Salvatore’s future looks bright, with the promise of a new family who will appreciate his loyalty and love.
