Rottweiler Takes on Unique Role: Protecting Family Bread

Dogs have long been valued as guardians and protectors, with their loyalty and bravery celebrated by many cultures throughout history.

While modern dogs often serve as loving companions, one Rottweiler, Jackie, has taken on an unusual role within her family: guarding the household’s bread.

Jackie was adopted by Katrina Frank, who didn’t expect much more than a loyal companion when she brought her into the family.

However, Jackie, being the protective Rottweiler she is, quickly decides to show gratitude by safeguarding what she considers the family’s most valuable possession—their bread.

No one knows why Jackie latched onto bread as her primary focus, but she has been doing it consistently for four years, ever since the family moved to their farm.

Katrina shared, “She started this four years ago when we moved to our farm. Every time we would leave, she would hide the bread.”

Jackie is resourceful in her bread-guarding efforts. Katrina explains, “We have a bread box, so she likes to hop up and pull it out.

If I leave it in the pantry, she nudges the door open and gets it out. I’ve even put it in the refrigerator, and she’s opened the door to get it.” Wherever Katrina tries to hide the bread—whether in the bread box, the pantry, or the fridge—Jackie always finds it and ensures it’s safely tucked away.

Jackie’s favorite hiding spots are behind the couch or Katrina’s bedroom closet, where she sits and watches over the bread.

Jackie moves on to the next baked item if they run out of bread. “If I’m out of bread, she moves on to baked goods,” Katrina said. “Once, she took a Tupperware of cookies off the counter and hid all 17 individually without breaking any. She led me to all of them.”

Jackie has never taken a bite despite her dedication to safeguarding the bread and other baked goods. She seems content to be the family’s bread guardian, diligently performing her unique duty whenever her family is away from home.
