From Wobbly Steps to Climbing Pros: Rescued Kittens Find New Strength in Days
When Jamie, a dedicated foster volunteer at Baby Kitten Rescue, learned about two kittens needing special care, she didn’t hesitate to help.
The kittens, Cocoa and Butternut, had been saved from an uncertain future after local animal rescuer Claudia found them being given away with their siblings.
Observing Cocoa’s head tilt and Butternut’s unusual splay-legged walk, Claudia sought out Jamie’s expertise in handling cats with unique needs.
Despite their initial challenges, Cocoa and Butternut quickly made themselves at home, determined to explore their new surroundings.
Cocoa’s head tilt didn’t slow her down, and her brother Butternut busily scooted around, taking in every corner of his new environment.
Underweight at five weeks old, they immediately began gaining weight with proper food, rest, and attention.
“They may have special needs, but Cocoa and Butternut are just as curious and energetic as any other kitten,” Jamie said.
They were quick to master the litter box and enthusiastically approached every meal, gradually gaining strength and confidence to explore even more.
To help Butternut’s mobility, Jamie began physical therapy and leg taping, guiding his legs into the right position for better stability. He took to this treatment easily, becoming more agile and balanced daily.
In a surprising turn, Cocoa’s head tilt resolved within a day of arriving in foster care, allowing her natural playfulness to shine through.
Full of energy, Cocoa started scaling Jamie’s legs to reach her lap, where she and Butternut would compete for snuggles.
“Cocoa has endless energy when she’s awake,” Jamie remarked. Cocoa and Butternut rush over whenever she enters the room, eager for attention.
Butternut has also made remarkable progress in just days, learning to walk with his hind legs properly positioned and even starting to jump.
Jamie hopes these small exercises will strengthen his back legs. “He’s improving each day, and he makes the cutest little trills when he’s excited.”
As Butternut hones his climbing skills, Cocoa watches intently from Jamie’s lap, ready to jump in and wrestle her brother or playfully reach for his tail.
With each passing day, Cocoa and Butternut grow more comfortable and active, showing boundless energy and affection for their foster mom.
Just a week ago, these kittens faced an uncertain future. Now, with the loving care of their foster family, they’re well on their way to becoming lively, healthy cats, bringing joy and laughter to those around them.
