Paralyzed Puppy Crawls Across Botswana in Search of Help, Finds a New Chance at Life
Compassion and determination can make a world of difference — not just for people but also for animals in need.
A remarkable story from Botswana tells of a young dog who, despite a severe injury, found the strength to search for help and ultimately found a new beginning.
This incredible journey happened in the Okavango region of Botswana, a country renowned for its wildlife but where many domestic animals face challenging conditions.
One abandoned puppy, later named Poppy, had a damaged spine and could barely move her hind legs. Yet, she managed to crawl for miles, arriving at a remote camp where she spotted a group of volunteers.
The volunteers, led by Susanne Vogel, were working on an elephant-human conflict mitigation project when they saw Poppy dragging herself toward their camp.
Her plea for help was unmistakable, and the dog’s resilience immediately struck Vogel. “She crawled into our camp because her hind legs were paralyzed. She couldn’t walk,” Vogel recalled. “But she was so affectionate, reaching out for help.”
Poppy’s condition was serious. Her spine was fractured, and she was only seven months old. The team cleaned and fed her before taking her to a local veterinarian. The prognosis was grim: even with surgery, her chances of recovery were uncertain.
But the team didn’t give up. They saw Poppy’s determined spirit and began organizing therapy and rehabilitation for her, working to build up strength in her legs.
Together, they launched a fundraising effort for her ongoing care, which quickly garnered support from animal lovers worldwide.
One of Poppy’s most joyful moments came when she received a custom wheelchair, allowing her to move easily. Through hours of therapy, she gained strength and eventually managed to stand on her legs.
Finally, Poppy found a permanent, loving home with MaryBeth Hastings in Washington, DC, who adopted her and brought her to the United States.
Poppy’s journey from an injured puppy in Botswana to a thriving pet in America is a testament to her resilience and the compassion of those who helped her.
