A small puppy, barely 20 days old, was found abandoned on a hillside near Chanis, Panama, in a severely weakened state.

Covered in lice, fleas, and sores, her health was dire. She struggled to move, her breathing was labored, and her eyes remained shut.

Rescuers brought her to Veterinary Paws & Footprints of Chanis, where she received round-the-clock care.

At just 0.66 kg (1.45 lbs), the tiny puppy required multiple injectable medications every few hours to stabilize her condition.

Her blood sugar dropped frequently due to her inability to eat, leading to repeated blood transfusions—a difficult and painful process, especially for such a young animal. Her cries filled the night, echoing her struggle.

The veterinarians noted that despite these transfusions, her anemia showed little improvement as her body struggled to regenerate blood cells.

After one transfusion, however, her hemoglobin level improved from 3.0 to 4.5, her platelets rose from 28 to 84, and her hematocrit increased from 12 to 16, allowing her to be temporarily discharged.

During her recovery, the puppy, affectionately named Baby Amor, slowly began to settle down and stopped crying through the night.

She remains under observation each morning at the clinic, where the medical team continues to monitor her condition.

By the end of the first week, Amor started eating small amounts of Proplan canned puppy food. Her appetite gradually improved, and she now receives a dose of water and iron-rich malt extract every two hours. As her wounds begin to heal, the itch from the healing skin is a sign of her body’s progress.

Though her physical strength is limited, Amor’s resilience has been unwavering. She fights against all odds, showing a determined spirit to survive and return to health.
